Chapter 5
Jack woke some time later. He crawled from the narrow bunk, stopping to admire the delicate beauty of Sophie sleeping. She was on her side, one pink nipple showing through a draping of her fine textured golden hair. He wanted nothing more than to slide back into bed with her, but he really should check the helm. He could tell though they were still in the belly of the zephyr. All the lights were on full power, but there was no background noise associated with the cryst hopper or the super fire inside his furnace that kept the shipâs power cells fueled.
The helm showed they had slept for six hours but no other changes. The viewer still showed only bright light. He unplugged Bob and set him at the helm with the duty of reporting any change. He went back to the ladiesâ common room and checked out the food in their cold storage. Potted meat on biscuits and a few of the fruit tarts Jellica Rose and Maudette were so fond of making, and coffee.
He returned to the bunk with a tray of food to share. Sophie was on her side facing away from him, her spine a jewel-like perfection. He noticed her skin coloring was tawny, like her hair. Unclothed she was beautiful, all fine lines and curves. She was a woman whose clothing gave her more substance. Nude she was smaller, almost fragile. Odd that he found her so lovely. Normally he went for tall, robust women with full curves. Women the size of Sophie seemed too delicate for vigorous lovemaking, though Sophie had certainly disabused him of that notion. He was even a little sore in places. And he could sleep again, soon.
After a light meal. And after...
âHow long did it take your ancestor to get to Starlanderâs Green in the zephyr? Did your family record say?â
Jack yawned. âYes. About a week.â
Sophie smiled. âYule is in twelve days.â
He raised his eyebrows. âYule. Weâre inside a spacefaring beast and you are thinking about Yule?â
She grinned at him. âI am. It is such a...a normal time, something loving families celebrate all over the Terran colony worlds. I want Flora to experience it, every year from now on. I want her to have memories of a happy childhood. Hopefully by Yule we will be safe on Starlanderâs Green.â
âHopefully.â She wore only her chemise and pantaloons. Jack reached out and captured a nipple, rolling it in between two fingers, making her feel weak.
âSomething lovers celebrate.â He pulled her down tight to him. âI want you astride me. I want to watch you.â
Her face flamed, even though they had been shockingly intimate several times. âNormal for a man of the universe like you perhaps. Pretty abnormal for a widow lady like me.â
He moved onto his back on the bed and pulled her astride him over his hips. He was already hard. His large hands deftly undid the tiny buttons and ribbons of her chemise. âThere may be very little to occupy us during this journey.
